AMELIA SAGRABB
DANCE ARTIST

BIO
Amelia Sagrabb is an emerging contemporary dance artist based in Perth, Western Australia. She recently graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in May 2020, receiving a BFA (Honours) majoring in dance and minoring in sociology. At Rutgers she performed works by Pam Tanowitz, Jordan Lloyd, Sean Curran, Erik Thurmond and Chien-Ying Wang, whilst also producing her own works. Her studies included a year at Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where she worked with Roni Chadash, Noa Zuk, Batsheva Dance Company and Vertigo Dance Company. Amelia has also undertaken additional intensive studies with STRUT Dance, Peridance/Hubbard Street Dance, Sydney Dance Company and Co:3 Australia. Additionally, she is a certified Yoga teacher and teaches at Yogaworx. Sagrabb is currently developing her professional debut, which will be an improvisatory work performed at Perth Fringe Festival 2021.
I am interested in movement and choreography that explores the interplay between dualities, for example, the playful and the vigorous; the minuscule and the immense; the personal and the impersonal; the mechanical and the creature-like; the specific and the unruly. To me, movement can play between polar ends of a spectrum, and the space between these end points is where I am pulled into new terrain. Within these dualities, I enjoy researching how opposing forces can repel, but can also come together. By allowing disorder and surrendering control, I ask how much can the body handle? My practice is deeply steeped in improvisation, largely inspired by Gaga due to its focus on imagery and internal representations of texture, which can then be conveyed through external physicalisation. I am drawn to weightedness with an added layer of theatricality, moved by an actively involved space and our relationship with the use of objects. Impulse presents itself and the choice to take it is up to chance, declaring spontaneous opportunity. Movement provides me with an avenue to create works that conceptualise womanhood in the modern world.
